Message Overview: No one believes someone who says that they are sorry for what they said if they
continue to say the same things. Even an eight-year-knows the difference between words and actions. Genuine
sorrow is always displayed by a change in direction.
Jesus began his ministry teaching about repentance and belief. Taking time to define these two words
is essential to understanding the gospel. Very simply, repentance is about changing directions. Biblical belief is
not belief in anything we choose, but it has very specific content. Biblical belief is not consistent with a
mystical faith in faith itself…it is something different than blind hope. The Bible is clear that repentance and
belief involves turning away from something and turning toward something specific in its place.
We see the message of repentance and belief carried forward in Acts as the Apostles immediately begin
sharing the gospel in response to the movement of the Holy Spirit in and among them. Genuine belief is
always accompanied by a life that has changed direction (2 Cor 5:17, James 2:18).
